Self Portrait Photography

5 Facts About The History of Photography

  • 1.

  • The first successful picture was developed in 1827 by Niépce, and it took 8 hours to expose. Two years later Niépce joined Louis Daguerre in a partnership, but he died only four years later. Daguerre is believed to be the "father" of photography, since by accident he exposed a plate in his chemical cupboard.

  •

  • 2.

  • The first successful photographic process was called Daguerreotype. It was invented by Louis Daguerre and found by accident in 1835 and announced to the public in 1839.

  • 3.

  • James Clerk Maxwell made the first advances in colour photography and he began working with colour in 1860 by taking three exposures, each one with a different color filter (red, green, blue), and then projecting the three images using three lanterns with the corresponding filters.

      4.

Photos made with the first Daguerrotypes       took 10 to 20 minutes to properly expose         to available light. People were required to         sit still for that long to have their picture           taken. Rests were used to keep the                     subject still.

      5.

The first photographs were all                             monochrome. They used hand colouring to       add colour to their pictures before colour         photography was invented.

STILL IMAGE UNIT

During the still image unit, I learned about aperture and shutter speed, and different parts of the camera. Aperture is the hole in the lens of the camera that opens and closes. It determiness how much light is let into the camera. Depending on the size of the aperture, your picture will vary on how it looks. Shutter speed is a measurement of how long the shutter is open on the camera. For example, 1s would mean that the shutter is open for one second, and 1/4s would be one quarter of a second or 0.25 of a second. With the pinhole camera, I learned that it is important to keep the camera box steady while letting light into it. I also learned that you shouldn't let the light in for too long or expose the photo paper too light too much. This can ruin your picture and you will most likely have to retake another picture to get a good picture. When doing self portrait photography, it is important or good to know or have an idea of how to use photoshop. It is good to know how to use it because you might want to edit your self portrait and add effects to it.
